"Mama, I'm home!" I announced as I walked through the front door of my parents’ house a few hours later. It was a quaint little cottage that always made everything better when I was having a shitty day. Home was the right word. Ever since I was little, I always remembered her having pictures on the walls of our family. Right above the fireplace in the living room was a picture of the three of us sitting around the Christmas tree one year dressed in matching pajamas. Every time she looked at it she got teary eyed because she “always wanted the perfect family” she told me.

It smelled like Mama was baking one of her famous apple crumble pies that I loved. She had this really sweet little bakery stand she did at the flea market on the weekends and people absolutely loved her baking. Everything was homemade. She put her heart and soul into every single baked good she made.

"Hi, my sweet boy. What're you doing here?" This was the same thing every time I stopped by. I was an only child and my parents loved spoiling me. But the pet names were the worst. I endured it anyway because I wanted my mama happy and if that made her happy, then so be it. Walking into the kitchen I saw that it was a mess of flour, sugar, and apple skins like usual when she was baking stuff. Giving her a kiss on the cheek, I told her it's been a couple days since I've been here.

"You know you don't have to stop by and check on us all the time. Your father and I are fine. He is out playing golf with his friends. So I'm just here baking. As you can see. Wanna try some of the filling before I pour it in the pie crust?" This was a thing too. She always told me I didn't have to stop by but I was always close with them and it felt strange not seeing them for the past few days being so wrapped up in Joel and all his glory.

"Of course, Mama. Your baking is my favorite." She grinned at me like she always did when I told her that and it was the truth. She handed me a fork and I took a bite, tasting the sweetness of the brown sugar and the tartness of the apples with just a hint of vanilla. I didn't know how she perfected everything every time but it was like a little burst of happiness in my mouth.

"How do you get it so perfect every time?" I asked honestly but already knew the answer I was going to get.

"A baker never tells her secrets, son. Now why don't you go get washed up and I will whip you up something for lunch." Knowing even though I was a grown man she'd still whoop my ass if I didn't listen, I went to the bathroom downstairs and did as she asked.
